Monthly Archives: January 2019

Should we skip school, ride with a friend up to Breck and see the very last day of the snow sculptures….well, of course we should!

My friend Ann wanted to see the sculptures, last week the weather was too snowy for my van, so she said she’d drive this week. It all worked out. It was a bit chilly, but not terrible up there. Jack was happy to have a higher seat to see out of, so he stayed awake for almost the whole ride up.

FIrst stop, ice sculptures, they were in the shade at this time of day.

Then on to the snow sculptures. I don’t agree with 2nd place over 3rd place, but I’m no judge.

2nd place Sphere and holes.

3rd place Hippo Ballerinas.

1st place, this angler type fish.

Jack playing King of the HIll.

Dance, party, computers, mall, Coney island, snow

Friday –

Time for the Winter Wonderland dance. I dropped off the girls and… they had fun! I was sure I’d pick them up early, but they stayed from 6 to 9:30pm.

Saturday it was go to the mall (and I put pics of Jack all over the Microsoft store computers.)

And got some late b-day pics of Bethany (the mall has great backdrops.)

Then it was off to drop the girls at the MCA for an 80’s party.

I took the opportunity to run by the Courthouse to take pics of the lights.

Sunday we went to church and decided to take a drive to Coney island for hot dogs.

When we got home, Jack was bored.

Goings on, school, work for Grace, river samples, teen poe-tea, ice carvings, youth group, teen science cafe, driving practice, Paint mines, doc, blood draw, Platte hike, Chocolate affair, church, zoo (maybe)

Dinners -Italian sausage and potatoes, chicken pot pie, hamburger patties with mushrooms and onions, beef and barley stew, aloo phujia, chicken with tabbouleh.

Aloo Phujia

Lightly brown onion in oil in a medium size skillet.
Stir in salt, cayenne, turmeric and cumin. Add potatoes and cook 10 minutes stirring occasionally.
Add tomatoes and pork, cover pan and cook until potatoes are soft, about 10 minutes.

Snow dog on Monday.

School, skating, TDO, snow

School, Agriscience, English, Algebra, Biology, History, math, LA, reading and we got cable so now we have Discovery and History channel. There was a bit of snow on Tuesday, but by the time we had to leave for skating the roads were fine. An ice skating session was set up by someone else, it was nice to just show up and not have to coordinate.

Wed I took the girls with me to TDO because no one else was coming. I worked on some art.

They were bored after dinner so we went to Chuck E Cheese, haven’t been there in forever, but I’m glad they went back to everything is 1 point (like a token.)

Happy Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day. Some facts about him. Celebrate his life by being a good, kind, benevolent person.

-King was the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
-Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a national holiday.
-At the Atlanta premier of the movie Gone with the Wind, Martin sang with his church choir.
-There are over 730 streets in the United States named after Martin Luther King, Jr.
-One of his main influences was Mohandas Gandhi who taught people to protest in a non-violent manner.
-He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
-The name on his original birth certificate is Michael King. This was a mistake, however. He was supposed to be named after his father who was named for Martin Luther, the leader of the Christian reformation movement.
-He is often referred to by his initials MLK.

It was a lazy day.

We Jack to the dog park when Grace went to work.

The girls watched Jack while James and I went to a lecture about world travel on a shoestring. I thought the speakers places that she wanted to visit were interesting and most of them are not the things we want to see, but she did have good tips for traveling light and some money saving tips.

Woo-hoo, time for the Speakeasy Soiree!

At The Stanley.

Working on the Charleston with LaPompe and friends swinging tunes.

Good food, good drinks, good dancing, good music. So much date night fun.

Sunday – I worked at church and we had to go to the laundromat to wash clothes, our washer died.

Dinners – pork stir fry, meatballs and penne pasta, tamale pie, cilantro lime chicken over brown rice, chicken apple salad, pizza.

Goings on – co-op postings start, CC work for Grace, dog park, Highlands Ranch lecture ‘travel on a shoestring’, driving practice, school, ice skating, NIA, TDO, youth group, ice sculptures, hike, teen dance, MCA teen 80’s party, church, new youth group starts.

But first, we had our site testing at Riverwatch. We had to lug our stuff there (because they are testing us to see if their numbers match our numbers.) I don’t think I waited long enough on DO because I had to match my own number and got a B, but everything else was an A (so matching their numbers to a degree.)

It was snowing like crazy, huge flakes, puffy, blowing. We went in to eat lunch and when we came out – bam, no more snow. We were headed to the zoo, so it was fine that it stopped snowing. There were only a few people there (free day), so that was nice. Most of the animals were indoors, enjoy!
