Grandma visits, Bethany is 20, Money musuem, Stock show

Standard

Monday Bethany and a friend got to hang out, I ran some errands, made some art, Mama and Tony got in late so they went straight to the hotel.

Tuesday was Bethany’s 20th birthday. She and Meskiel went to the tea shop and then to the antique stores. The rest of us went to St. John’s for Music at Noon. The cathedral was still decorated from Christmas and it was so pretty.

Jack stayed at puppy daycare while we were gone. We ate lunch at SAME cafe and they were doing another taping for their future fundraiser and I think we were too loud at one point.

Bethany wanted to go to Saltgrass for dinner they had a new apple sangria that was so good, my pork chop was huge, everyone had way too much food (but it was good.)

She opened presents at home, a B&N gift card, calligraphy set, crystal jar, candle, yoga dice and Zelda book. She had picked up some books at the antique store, so she’s got enough books right now.

Wednesday we went to the Springs to see the Money museum, they still had the WWI exhibit, but that’s cool because I got to see some things I didn’t see last time.

I thought it would be a good stop for Mama and Tony because they’d never been there before and they do a lot of metal detecting and coin collecting. We got a late start, so we ate at Fargo’s before the museum, I hadn’t noticed the napkin art before, but Grace left a piece of napkin art for them.

Hannah wanted to go swimming, so some of us did. I had beef stew waiting in the crockpot when we got back, I’m glad it was hot and ready, everyone is always hungry after swimming.

Thursday was their last day in town, we went to the Stock show parade, I think it was shorter than last year (and had fewer cattle), but it was still neat (and we had good seats this year.)

We had lunch at Cafe 180, they put the reuben sandwich back on the menu, so I had that and my usual salad. Back at the house we played Uno until the shuttle driver came.

A quick trip, but we managed to put a lot of stuff in it.

Errands and skating

Standard

Jack and I ran some errands and I took him to Fairmount cemetery. I had never been before, there are a lot of historic Denver names buried there and lots of sculptures and burial art.

We decided to go to regular skate on Friday. Grace tried in-lines and did great, I ate a pickle and it turned my tongue green.

Then it was cheese trivia, cheese sampling and learning about cheese at a library teen event. Jack and I walked around and warmed up by the fire.

Christmas day

Standard

Merry CHRISTmas.

A little music video from Joel and company here.

I made latkes and monkey bread for breakfast, James made egg potato.

While other stuff was getting ready we opened presents. Jack got 3 new balls and was super excited.

Opening presents.

Cookies.

Lunch –

We got green tea bombs, they bloom into a flower.

Some art from yesterday.

Joel made a video call to us and we talked for about an hour. He said they had a feast for lunch, not so much for dinner, he worked part of the day, made a video with friends and he did get our present a few days earlier, so that was good. We had time for a nap, then we went to the movies. The girls saw Mary Poppins and James and I sae Holmes and Watson. Both were good, in different ways (Holmes and Watson is not a family movie.) We picked up Jack and went to look at lights.

Our horrible family photo, the lens was dirty, the dog was looking away, it’s to light, but there you go – unfiltered Merry Christmas.

James and I had a Christmas nightcap at Phil’s and then bed.

Recital

Standard

Advent day 10.

It was nice only having 1 set of shirt, leotard, bloomers and skirt to iron.

Here’s the video from rehearsal (they were wearing green tunics and gold leaf sparklers in their hair. They had to use about 100 bobby pins to keep it in her hair!)

The sunset was amazing.

Grand Junction

Standard

Advent day 8 –

We got a late start to GJ, the views were nice along the way.

I went to the mall and dinner with the girls while James and Jack stayed at the hotel.

I made Jack a little nest on the other bed with pillows surrounding his blanket, rectified Goodnight Moon twice and he went to sleep. The girls were snacking, watching TV and sleeping in Bethany’s dorm.

Weekend

Standard

Saturday, Advent day 1.

I had a women’s Christmas tea at church, I ate way too many scones, but they were so good.

I got to wear my new hat.

We made a little craft, I’m going to add some stuff to it, the paint was a little thick.

We went to the mall and I found a ‘World’s Goodest Teacher’ hat.

We had a good time walking around. When we got back home we rescued Jack from the crate and took him to Petsmart to get some food. They had free treats, so he got lucky with bacon and cookies in a bag to take home. We bought 2 new balls, we had 3 green spiky ones…but we threw away 2 of them this week due to his chewing the spikes off.

Grace went to her youth group and helped watch kids, I took Hannah to our church to meet the prospective youth pastor. We took some photos after.

Sunday, Advent day 2.

From church –

In a land of deep darkness
a Light shines to see –
Jesus, the Christ
from whom evil will flee.

Our Wonderful Counselor
a gift from above,
God’s beloved Son
cradled with love.

The leader to guide us
in a world out of control,
oh Wonderful Counselor
a balm for the soul.

Don’t lose your sense of awe
at the heart of it all,
for our Wonderful Counselor
waits for your call.

-Liese

We went for a drive to Manitou Springs.

Jack had fun going in and out of shops, we shopped around for an hour, then headed to the arcade.

I had to play the indoor Galaga, I hate that one (the fire button gets stuck.) Jack was ready to blast off!

We saw pics of Joel’s troop participating in the obstacle course at camp.

We got back home, shopped and started dinner. We ended the night by watching a long Columbo, I wish the guy had just confessed, it would have saved us an hour.

Our week – school, final kid sitting, final worship dance, Hora around the Menorah at LM’s, Spot the Elf in Lafayette, Jazz at EG, driving for Grace, youth group, TDO in CR,  Constellation family night, Jazz at ACC, Grand Junction visit with Bethany, Frisco Wassail days.

Dinners this week – chicken marsala, Asian tacos, tamale pie, Greek chicken with couscous, Brazilian black bean stew.

Brazilian Black Bean Stew

1 tablespoon canola oil
1/4 pound chorizo sausage, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 (1 pound) sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
1 large red bell pepper, diced
2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes with juice
1 small hot green chile pepper, diced
1 1/2 cups water
2 (16 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
1 mango – peeled, seeded and diced
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 teaspoon salt

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat, and cook the chorizo 2 to 3 minutes. Place the onion in the pot, and cook until tender. Stir in garlic, and cook until tender, then mix in the sweet potatoes, bell pepper, tomatoes with juice, chile pepper, and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 15 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender.
Stir the beans into the pot, and cook uncovered until heated through. Mix in the mango and cilantro, and season with salt.
