We had a major hailstorm yesterday afternoon. Grace and Bethany had walked to the store and called me to pick them up because they could see a storm coming. While I was waiting at the light, a flash of lightning hit the outdoor pool at the rec center, then a huge boom of thunder followed. When I picked up the girls I saw another crack of lightning on the other side of the street, we got home fast. There were tornado clouds forming, so I told the girls to be ready to go to the basement. Grace and Hannah ran upstairs and grabbed Mr. Otter and Bunny (hey, preparedness takes many forms.) I went back outside to look at the clouds and the tornado was coming down, then getting sucked back up; the air cooled and I told them, ‘here comes the hail.’

It’s not unusual here to get hail in the Summer, hot air colliding with cold air and we get a massive thunderstorm which usually produces pea sized hail.

This time the hail started out as golf-ball size, it was shooting like missiles from the sky, bouncing off the ground and pounding into the house.

We did have damage to windows, screens and siding, but the roof is fine and I closed the garage so the car didn’t get damaged.

My flowers from Bethany got pummeled and leaves were shredded from the trees.

The hail eventually became a bit smaller, but the storm lasted until 5, then it literally turned around and came back for a second pass, another 30 minutes of marble sized hail and then rain. In all it hailed for an hour, which is a really, really long time. It was also a very compact storm, it hit HR and went a bit North and then East, but some places got no rain or hail at all.

When James got home we made a run by Grandma’s to drop off more birthday cards. She’s gotten 42 cards as of today and she had more flowers and some balloons delivered to the house.

I think she’s going to be busy for week opening those cards.

And, we finally got the prom pictures, looks like they had fun.
